Shadow Dance

"Your shadow is not always dark... you just have to let her play too, let her out into the light so she can dance."

August 18, 2013

I don't have my own words...

But these are where I'm at.. Right now in this moment.

Not super proud but cutting myself some slack. Taking time to nurture that little girl inside who is so so scared right now.

We can do this sweet girl. I love you.

Tiny Wisdom: Be Good to Yourself

“Be gentle first with yourself if you wish to be gentle with others.” -Lama Yeshe
All too often we’re unforgiving and cruel to ourselves in a way we’d never treat our friends.
We’d never look a friend in the eyes and tell her she’s not good enough. We’d never beat a friend up over one mistake he made years ago. We’d never expect a friend to move mountains when she’s exhausted and clearly needs a rest.
Why do we sometimes do these things to ourselves?
So often when we think about self-love, we think about the big picture—forgiving ourselves for past mistakes and accepting ourselves, imperfections and all.
But in much the same way we show love in relationships through tiny acts of appreciation and consideration, we can love ourselves through small, maybe even random acts of kindness.
For me, that means allowing myself to relax if I need to, even if I feel like I should be productive. It means treating myself to a nice lunch every now and then, even if I feel I should save money. It means responding to negative thoughts in my head with the same uplifting advice I’d give my sister.
Sometimes it also means seeing in the mirror that little girl who I used to be—the little girl who always did her best and wanted nothing to more than to have someone hug her and tell her it was good enough. It’s my job to do that now.
It’s all of our jobs.
Today, give yourself the consideration and kindness you’d extend to the people you love. If you’re dissatisfied with your progress, remind yourself of all you’ve accomplished. If you made a mistake, cut yourself from slack. If you’re tired, take it easy.
All the goodness you put out into the world starts with how you treat yourself.

A conversation with Little Poppy

Poppy: I feel alone. I'm afraid he doesn't love me anymore. I know it’s silly. Nothing happened but I’m just scared and lonely.

Strong One: Oh sweet girl… he loves you more than you can possibly know.
But I love you even more and I have a secret for you...
We can’t change or control how much anyone loves us or how they treat us. What matters is that I’m here for you anytime you need me. I love you to the moon and back. I know you.. all of you and I think you’re amazing. You are strong and courageous, beautiful, funny and crazy smart. You love animals and drawing pictures in the dirt with a stick. You love to paint and sing and move to beautiful music. I know all your secrets that you are scared to tell anyone. I love your tangled red hair and dirty cheeks and sweaty little hands and feet. You don’t have to hide anything from me because I love it all and I will never hurt you or leave you.

Poppy: But it’s not the same… I want him to love me.

Strong One: I know baby girl… you have a big hole in your heart from the first man you ever loved. You loved him with everything you had and when he left it broke your little heart into a million pieces. You decided that there must be something wrong with you. But what you don’t understand little one is that he had to leave. He had to go find himself. It wasn’t about you. He never stopped loving you. You are his baby girl and always will be. You are so special and you are a bright light in this dark world. You love with everything you have and give like there’s no tomorrow. Don’t let other people’s behavior mean anything about who you are. Go on and love love love.  So pick up your chin and smile. Go out in the sun and let your beautiful red hair shimmer and shine. Twirl… spin your skirt.. dance… jump.. climb rocks… swim.. move with the wind and let your light shine. You are a special gift to this world.

Come close and let me whisper something in your ear. I have a secret mission for you? Are you ready?

Poppy shakes her head yes, curls up in my lap and looks at me with wonder in her eyes..

Strong One: Here it is… go out and show everyone you can that they have that same light burning bright in their hearts too. Everyone gets sad and scared when bad things happen. You’re not the only one. And some people get so scared they give up and choose to live in the dark. But when you smile and look them in the eyes and shoot that laser beam of love into their hearts, a magical thing happens. Hope shows up and sparks their light too.

Poppy: Ok....   But what if he leaves? I have this terrible feeling that everyone is going to leave me. That something is wrong with me.

Strong One: There is nothing wrong with you. You are perfectly human and worthy of all kinds of love. But you must let go. Let go of tomorrow. Because nothing is forever. Things change and it's ok. You will always have what you need. If you spend all of your time worrying about him leaving, you are missing out on him while he's here. Let go and love. Trust that you will be ok. Let you light shine and soak in the light of those around you. Listen to their words, feel their embrace and let it fill your heart with even more love. Life is a big circle of giving and receiving. If you cling too tightly it breaks that perfect system and doesn't give anyone the space they need to be able to love. So let go of the fear of tomorrow and hold on to the hope of love. You have seen it at work and know how powerful it is. It changes everything. So let go, it's ok. I'm letting go too.

On Staying Home with Kids

Dear Little Poppy,

One of my dreams has always been to be a stay at home mom.

This did not work out so well with my first son.
I immediately had post-pardom depression
and it never really seemed to get better.
I gained 30 pounds in one year
and sometimes couldn't pull my body off the couch
to take care of my son.
I still carry a lot of shame about my behavior.
I felt different from all of my church friends
who seemed to love being a mommy.
All I wanted was to be left alone.
(sound familiar?)

Fast forward 8 years
and I am better now, but still struggling.
I work full time because I think it's better for everyone right now.
I am on this healing journey and I can see improvement.
The last two days I have been home
all day with my younger son.
He is four and has emotional issues himself.
Yesterday was awful.
I couldn't seem to get enough alone time.
I kept trying to occupy him with things,
so that I could do my own thing.
I felt so guilty and I felt shame again.

What is wrong with me?
I love this child so much,
why don't I want to spend time with him?

I can remember watching a video
just a few days ago about a man who was
in a near death experience and
he couldn't wait to get home to see his boys.
I cried and knew exactly how he felt.
But why now that I am getting to spend this precious alone time
with my son, why do I want to escape him?

I didn't understand it,
but I decided to breathe through it
and try another day with him today.
He did have a fever the night before
so I could justify another day off work.
We did much better today.
He watched one cartoon in the morning
while I showered and got ready for the day.
(I didn't get that far yesterday)
Then we played with play dough and legos.
We played board games and computer games.
I was actually having fun with him until it was time to head to the store.
You see my son HATES wearing socks and shoes.
He literally fights us every day about it.
We have tried every trick in the book to get him to wear them,
but eventually it just takes forcing the shoes on
and telling him it will feel better in a few minutes.
And it does,
but I am exhausted and feel defeated
after the ordeal.

Today was no different,
I could feel my energy draining
and my desire to escape rising to the surface.
We headed to the store and
I'm glad I made that choice.
It kept me moving and I got some sun in the car.
By the time we left Wal-mart, all was good again.
He was looking so cute
in his hand-knit R2-D2 hat
and he had been an angel in the store.
Not a single argument.
The rest of the day was great.
We had lunch, watched another cartoon
and then headed out to pick up his big brother at school.
On the way he fell asleep
and I haven't been able to wake him since.
He is out for the night and I actually miss him.

This is how I know I am getting better,,
I actually want to spend more time
with my child after being home with him all day.
It doesn't seem like much and
I am definitely not a perfect mother,
but I have to rejoice in these small victories.

So, I bet you wonder why I'm telling you all this, little poppy.

Well it is because I think you made all the difference.
Because you were out and playing with my son,
we all had a great day.
I know you got scared when he started yelling
and fighting about his shoes,
but you managed to hang in there long enough to play with him again.

Thank you for being brave today and trying to play.

It was fun being with both of you.

Love me,
The Strong One

no matter what, you are going to be ok

Dear sweet little poppy

We have been stuck here for a few days now, haven’t we?
I’ve been searching and hoping for some magic solution
that would make our life comfortable enough,
that you would be willing to come out.
The truth is, life doesn’t work that way.
Coming out and staying present in life is hard.

It takes courage to step out and accept things as they are.
You also have every right to feel jealous of the little boys.
They are allowed to be who they are.
They are allowed to express their emotions
and you were not given that opportunity.
 But things are different now.
You can tell me anything in any way you please.
I will listen to you and allow you to have those thoughts and feelings.
I am also here to calm your fears and remind you that you are deeply loved.
When you come out things will not be perfect.
The little boys will still whine and cry.
Sad things and frustrating things will happen.
All of those things help us grow up
if we try to learn from them.
I’m not going to lie and say “things will get better”,
but I will be honest with you and say
“no matter what, you are going to be ok”

Love me,
The Strong One

“Fear is a natural reaction of moving closer to the truth.
If we commit ourselves to staying right where we are,
then our experience becomes very vivid.
Things become very clear when there is nowhere to escape.”

“Nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to know.”

First Letter

Dear Little Poppy

I am so excited to be writing this letter to you.

I am also a little afraid of not following through like I should.

But you are very important to me and you are a priority in my life.

A few weeks ago I asked you to come and be a part of the family.

Our house is very active with 2 little boys

and a very nice and gentle daddy. We have a lot of fun.

The most important thing about our house is that it is a safe place for you.

You can be yourself and speak without fear.

Everyone here loves you very much.

Love me,
The Strong One
